· Virus were discovered by iwanowsky in 1892
· The first discovered virus was tobacco mosaic virus
· These are exception to cell theory as not made of cells and smallest one
· It is heterotrophic as depend on other organic material
· It has cell wall so considered as plant
· They are devoid of ribosomes so they cannot produce protein for there own use
· They are made of protein and nucleic acid
· The virus without nucleic acid is called viroin
· The virus without protein is called proin
· The virus is just like a gene without cell
· They can multiply only inside the living cell so they are called intracellular parasite
· They are dead outside the cell
· They can be divided into three types on the basis genetic material
1. Deoxyvira have dna as gentic material they are most animal viruses
2. Reovira have RNA as genetic material and are mostly found in plant virus
3. Retrovira these can show reverse transcriptase
· They have a great negative economic importance as they cause serious human diseases
· Viral STD includes HIV HEPATITIS & HERPES
