PETA : People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has entered the Limca Book of Records as the largest animal rights organization (May 11, 2009)
A few Points:
1. PETA India's chief functionary is Anuradha Shawney.
2. PETA India, based in Mumbai, was launched in January 2000.
3. PETA India operates under the simple principle that animals are not ours to eat, wear, experiment on or use for entertainment, while educating policymakers and the public about animal abuse and promoting an understanding of the right of all animals to be treated with respect.
4. PETA India focuses primarily on the areas in which the greatest numbers of animals suffer the most: in the food and leather industries, laboratories and the entertainment industry.
5. PETA India’s investigative work, public education efforts, research, animal rescues, legislative work, special events, celebrity involvement and national media coverage have resulted in countless improvements to the quality of life for animals and have saved countless animals’ lives.
6. It had organized a campaign that led to a ban on elephants entering various cities in 2007.
7. It was also responsible for the ending of animal experiments by the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education in 2008.
8. The organization has also rescued a number of exploited animals from the circus and exposed the cruel laboratory conditions at the National Institute of Virology Pune.
9. It had also organized a petition drive along with many Bollywood stars to prohibit bullocks from pulling heavy oil tankers in Mumbai.
